Colorado Congressional Delegation Supports Electric Co-op Loan Program

March 21, 2012

For the last several weeks, CREA and Tri-State have been working hard to encourage all of the members of the Colorado Congressional delegation to sign a letter to the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee in support of continued funding for the Rural Utilities Service for the 2012-13 fiscal year. The letter also urges that some of the limitations in the budget, such as the requirement that a certain amount of funding be set aside for renewable power generation, be eliminated. We have made sure our delegation is aware that the $6.1 billion loan level will result in DEFICIT REDUCTION of $369 million in fiscal year 2013.

We are happy to report that as of yesterday ALL SEVEN members of the Colorado delegation have signed onto the letter in support of this important funding source for electric co-ops. The letter garnered the support of 113 members of the House of Representatives, including 66 Democrats and 47 Republicans. This is more than the number that signed a similar letter last year, and included 38 members of the House who were not on last year’s letter.  A special thanks goes out to Congressman Scott Tipton who was one of the five co-leads on this year’s letter (Congressman Cory Gardner was a co-lead last year). Colorado’s electric co-ops appreciate this bipartisan support of our program which is essential to the continued economic viability of rural Colorado.
