Remembering Randy Udall

July 8, 2013

We were deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of Randy Udall, one of the best guys you could ever meet and a friend of the Colorado electric co-op family.

Randy was a committed environmentalist and renewable energy advocate and a compelling speaker on energy issues. I had the good fortune of hearing him speak twice this summer, once at an NREL conference and also at the annual meeting of the Delta-Montrose Electric Association on June 14. On both occasions, he used his wit, intellect, and singular communication skills to advocate for a new energy paradigm.

Randy was an environmental advocate without peer, but he was also a realist and very pragmatic about the value and wonder of the existing electric grid and the challenges of shifting to more renewables. The electric co-ops considered him a reasoned voice who worked to find common ground between electric utilities and environmental groups.

I am truly grateful that I had the chance to benefit from Randy’s wisdom and expertise over the last few years in my work here at CREA and at Holy Cross Energy, and I am even more grateful to have considered him a friend. My only regret is that the lunch we planned on when I spoke with him at the DMEA meeting will not happen. I would like to pass on the sincere condolences of the electric co-op family to all of Randy’s family and friends, he was a true Colorado gem who will be missed.
